Preparing, Measuring, and Installing the LH Laminate Heating Elements

• Draw a plan of the floor identifying areas occupied by fixed furniture such as the kitchen cabinets (it is recommended that the heating elements would not be installed in these areas).
• Draw the heating elements side by side on to the plan leaving a minimum gap of 50mm between the wall and the edge of the heating element.
• Whenever possible, keep the element ends fitted with the live and neutral cables along one wall. This should be the same wall on which the thermostat is mounted.
• The LH installation area must be covered by VB Vapour Barrier before the floor surface is laid.

Choose the Thermostat for the Underfloor Heating System

There are 4 thermostats available for these laminate floor heating elements:

1. the A16C – Manual thermostat providing selection of air and floor sensor or floor sensor only
2. the G16C – Programmable digital thermostat with air and floor sensor
3. the F16C – Programmable digital thermostat with floor sensor only (generally used for bathrooms)

Step by step instructions of how to install the DEVImat

• Installing the Devimat – Step 1: Measure the room you want to install the Devimat in and draw a sketch to help you calculate which DEVI package you will need. Then you can go ahead and sketch in the position of the devimat heating cable mat.
• Installing the Devimat – Step 2: Mark the positioning of the toilet before you remove it. This helps you avoiding the placing of the toilet on top of the mat and it also prevents you from piercing it with screws.

• Installing the Devimat – Step 3: Cut a channel approx. 10 mm deep and wide in the wall and the floor – all the way from the thermostat and about 1 m out into the floor. After you finishes that, glue the flex pipe for the sensor into this channel, and seal the end of the pipe with a piece of tape.
• Installing the Devimat – Step 4: Clean the floor thoroughly, removing all dirt and soap residue, and then lay out the self-adhesive cable mat. Remember: the floor surface must be primed if you are not laying the mat on existing tiles.

• Installing the Devimat – Step 5: Clip through the grey netting to turn the mat over – at the same time make sure that you do not cut through the red cable!
• Installing the Devimat – Step 6: Turn the mat and position it as required. The self-adhesive effect can withstand 10-20 adjustments, so you can move the mat several times until you are satisfied with the result. Adjust the position of the mat according to how you think it should be fixed on the floor.

Installing the Devimat – Step 7

Once you have positioned the cable mat, you can – depending on the new floor surface – encapsulate it using self-levelling screed or cover it with a thin layer of tile adhesive.

How to choose the right Devimat

Now choose the closest size of Devimat (always choose the closest MINOR size).

Depending on which type of floor you are building, you can choose Devimat DTIF in 100 or 150 W/m2. Devimat DTIF 100 with 100 W/m2 is optimally suited for wooden floors and DTIF 150 with 150 W/m2 is especially suited for fitting on top of concrete and below tiled floors.

Example(see the picture above):
A bathroom is to be heated with Devimat as the only source of heat. The free space (i.e. the floor surface of the room minus toilet, bathtub, etc.) is calculated as 6.3 m2. The floor will be tiled and the base of the floor is concrete. The correct choice of Devimat is Devimat 150, 6.0 m2.

Fitting your new Devimat in 6 simple steps

Fitting the Devimat is simple to do by yourself, should you choose to(see our other article about this). However, please bear in mind that all electrical connections must always be carried out by a qualified electrician. A step-by-step procedure is provided below to make it as easy as possible for you.

Step 1.
Start by measuring the area where you want your floor heating. This way you can determine which size of Devimat you need. Always select a Devimat package that is slightly smaller than the floor area.

Step 2.
Then cut a 10 mm wide groove into the floor and wall for the floor sensor and tube. The tube allows for easy removal of the floor sensor, if required. Glue the tube housing the floor sensor into the channel and seal the end of the pipe with duct tape.

Step 3.
Before laying the self-adhesive mat, your existing floor should be clean and dry and primed if necessary. Once the mat has been tested, it can be rolled out and laid on the floor.

Step 4.
On reaching the end of the mat run, simply cut the mesh, turn the mat and lay the next piece next to the first one. The red heating cable must NOT be cut. The mat can withstand 3-5 adjustments as long as you do not press the mat to the floor. When you are happy with the result, press the mat to the floor. Devimat will now adhere firmly to the surface.

Step 5.
Cover with one layer of flexible tile adhesive/self-levelling compound and allow it to dry before tiling or lay the adhesive and tiles in one operation. A flexible adhesive and grout should always be used.

Step 6.
Mount the new tiles on the adhesive. Joint the tiles and let the floor dry for two weeks before turning on the heating.

Devimat features

  The cable is pre-spaced onto a self adhesive mesh which ensures an even and luxurious warm floor. The devimat can act as a primary heat source, providing the output covers the heat loss of the room.

Devimat Applications – types of floors the devimat solution can be installed onto

In the above image: Devimat installed onto concrete. When installed onto concrete, the layers are: the base floor, the insulation, the existing new or screeded floor, the devimat, the floor sensor, the adhesive/self leveling compound, and the floor covering.

In the above image: Devimat installed onto timber. When installed onto the timber, the layers are: wooden joists, plywood, the devimat, the floor sensor, the adhesive/self levelling compound, and the floor covering.

In the image above: Devimat installed onto tile-backer board (laminated floors). When installed on laminated floors, the layers are: the wooden joists, the tile backer insulation board, the devimat, the floor sensor, the adhesive layer, and the floor covering.
Although not essential, tile backer board helps reduce downward heat, therefore increasing the efficiency of the system for both concrete and timber floors.

The installation of the devimat solution

1. Measure the free floor area, that is, excluding all floor standing units, to determine which size devimat is required.
2. Cut a groove into the floor and wall 10mm deep and wide for the floor sensor and tube. The tube allows for easy removal of the floor sensor if required.
3. Before laying the devimat, the existing floor should be clean and dry, primed if necessary. Once the mat has been tested, it is then rolled out and laid on the floor.
4. Upon reaching the end of a mat run, simply cut the mesh, turn the mat, and lay the next piece beside the first. The red heating cable must NOT be cut!
5. Cover with one layer of flexible tile adhesive/self leveling compound and allow to dry before tiling, or lay the tile adhesive and tiles in one step. A flexible tile adhesive and grout should always be used.

  The deviguard cable monitor can be connected to the mat during the installation, in order to monitor the heating cable circuit. Accidents do happen and in the event that the heating cable is damaged during installation an audible alarm will sound, installation can be halted and the cable repaired with a repair kit. The unit uses a standard 9V battery (not supplied).

Choosing your system in three simple steps

1. Select the devimat type
   For timber based floors, select the 100W/sq m devimat and for concrete based floors select 150W/sq m. If a room is part timber, part concrete, treat each area separately with separate controllers.
2. Select a devimat size
   Select devimat or combination of mats equivalent to the available free floor area, or under, excluding all floor units(like the bath, WC, kitchen units, etc). For example, if there is 4.3 square metres available, select the 4sq m devimat.
3. Select the controller
   Generally only one controller will be needed, but for larger areas: timber based floors – use one per 35 square m, concrete based floors – use one per 23 square m.
